A new name is guaranteed, as the Italian will not defend his title this year. The points system has also been revised, with the introduction of a new stage category awarding the winner a hefty 70 points in the battle for the green jersey. For now, Isaac del Toro leads the points classification.

The points classification in the Tour de France is determined by riders' placings at intermediate sprints and stage finishes. The stages are divided into categories, ranked according to their importance for the points classification.

Category 1 stages are flat and obstacle-free, Category 2 stages are flat to rolling, while Categories 3 and 4 are classified as hilly and mountainous respectively. The individual time trial offers the fewest points, as there is, of course, no intermediate sprint.

The points are awarded as follows:

Category 1: 70 – 50 – 40 – 35 – 30 – 26 – 24 – 22 – 20 – 18 – 16 – 14 – 12 – 10 – 8 – 6 – 4 – 2 (Stages 5, 7, 8, 11 and 12)

Category 2: 50 – 30 – 20 – 18 – 16 – 14 – 12 – 10 – 8 – 7 – 6 – 5 – 4 – 3 – 2 (Stages 4, 13, 17 and 21)

Category 3: 30 – 25 – 22 – 19 – 17 – 15 – 13 – 11 – 9 – 7 – 6 – 5 – 4 – 3 – 2 (Stages 2, 3, 9 and 18)

Category 4: 20 – 17 – 15 – 13 – 11 – 10 – 9 – 8 – 7 – 6 – 5 – 4 – 3 – 2 – 1 (Stages 6, 10, 14, 15, 16, 19 and 20)

Intermediate sprints: 25 – 20 – 16 – 14 – 12 – 10 – 8 – 7 – 6 – 5 – 4 – 3 – 2 – 1 (Applies to every stage except the time trials.)
